Overview
Redesigning the TTC website around the rider experience
The TTC serves millions of riders across Toronto, while its website helps people plan and navigate their journeys through schedules, fares, service updates, and accessibility information. For this redesign, I explored how the experience could better organize information around common rider needs, with a focus on simplifying core tasks, improving the visibility of critical information, and creating a more intuitive experience across devices.
Challenge
Making essential information easier to find and act on
To create a clearer experience, I mapped the key tasks riders come to the TTC website to complete and examined how those tasks were supported across the existing experience. This helped identify opportunities to simplify navigation, bring high-priority tools forward, and create clearer paths between related information.
Structure
Mapping the paths riders need most
The existing website contained the information riders needed, but important tasks and tools were not always easy to access. Trip planning relied on an external tool, key resources were buried beneath lower-priority content, and service information was spread across the experience, making content harder to scan, particularly on mobile. The opportunity was to reorganize the experience around common rider tasks and bring the most relevant tools and information closer to the surface.
Design
Building a consistent system across the experience
The redesign simplified navigation around four primary areas, making common tasks easier to access. Trip planning was brought directly into the TTC experience and connected with routes, stations, maps, and service information. Disruptions, accessibility information, and network updates were made easier to find, while a reusable UI system established consistent patterns across navigation, alerts, route pages, and responsive layouts.
Homepage
Trip planning, schedules, and current service information are prioritized upfront, making essential tools easier to access.
Trip Planner
A native three-step flow brings route options, map previews, and service alerts together in one journey.
Schedules & Maps
A single hub for routes, stations, transit maps, and frequently accessed information.
Service Updates
A filterable feed makes it easier to find, scan, and understand current disruptions across the network.
Alerts
Service alerts are surfaced contextually across routes, stations, and relevant rider journeys.
Reflection
Designing the system, not just the screens
This project reinforced that strong product design comes from connecting the structure, flows, and interface rather than solving each screen in isolation. Mapping the experience around core rider tasks helped me make more intentional decisions about what information to prioritize, how different parts of the product connect, and where users need the most support.
It also showed me the value of designing with a system in mind. Building reusable patterns across routes, stations, alerts, and responsive layouts created a more cohesive experience while making the product easier to extend.
